CÁCH DÙNG CẤU TRÚC PREFER CHUẨN NHẤT

1 – Cấu trúc Prefer

Về cơ bản, ta dùng cấu trúc Prefer to V hoặc cấu trúc Prefer V-ing để diễn tả việc thích điều gì hơn. Dưới đây là một số cấu trúc cơ bản đi với động từ prefer:

a – Cấu trúc Prefer something to something

E.g. I prefer this dress to the one you wore yesterday.
(Anh thích chiếc váy này hơn chiếc em đã mặc ngày hôm qua.)

b –  Cấu trúc Prefer V-ing to V-ing

E.g. I prefer flying to travelling by train. (Tôi thích đi máy bay hơn đi tàu.)

2 – Cấu trúc Would prefer

Cấu trúc Would prefer được dùng khi muốn diễn tả một điều mình thích hơn. Dưới đây là một số cấu trúc Would prefer thường gặp:

a – Would prefer + to + V + rather than + V 

Cấu trúc này có nghĩa là muốn một cái gì đó hơn một cái gì đó khác 

Ví dụ:

I would prefer to stay at home than go to the cinema. (Tối nay tôi thích ở nhà hơn là tới rạp phim tối nay.)

b – Cấu trúc Would prefer to V

Cấu trúc này dùng để diễn ra ai đó thích cái gì đó.

Ví dụ:

Do you want to travel by train? – Well, I would prefer to travel by car.  (Chúng ta đi xe lửa nhé?” – Ồ tôi thích đi xe hơi hơn.)

Lưu ý!

Cấu trúc Would prefer thường được sử dụng trong bối cảnh yêu cầu sự lịch sự, trang trọng nhiều hơn là trong bối cảnh giao tiếp thường ngày.

3 – Cấu trúc Would rather

3.1. Cấu trúc would rather ở thì hiện tại

Cấu trúc 1: S + would rather + V 

Cấu trúc Would rather V có ý nghĩa gần như tương đương với cấu trúc Would prefer to V, đều có nghĩa là thích gì (hơn).

Ví dụ:

Jennie would rather go to school tomorrow. (Jennie thích tới trường vào ngày mai hơn.)

Do you want to ride on a bike? – Well I would rather ride on a car. (Em có muốn đi bằng xe đạp không?” – “Chà, tôi muốn đi bằng xe hơi hơn.)

Lưu ý!

Câu phủ định của cấu trúc would rather sẽ là cấu trúc would rather not V

Ví dụ:

Jennie would rather not go to school tomorrow. (Jennie không thích thích tới trường vào ngày mai hơn.)

Do you want to ride on a bike? – Well I would rather not ride on a bike. (Em có muốn đi bằng xe đạp không?” – “Chà, em không muốn đi bằng xe xe đạp đâu.)

Cấu trúc 2: S + Would rather + V + than + V

Cấu trúc này có nghĩa là thích làm việc gì đó hơn việc gì khác.

Ví dụ:

I’d rather stay at home tonight than go to the movies. (Tối nay tôi thích ở nhà hơn là đi xem phim.)

Jennie would rather go to school tomorrow than today. (Jennie thích đi học ngày mai hơn là hôm nay.)

3.2 – Cấu trúc would rather ở thể quá khứ 

Cấu trúc: S + would rather + V-P1

Cấu trúc này được sử dụng để diễn tả việc muốn/ không muốn người khác làm một điều gì đó hơn.

Ví dụ:

Should I stay here? – I’d rather you came with us. (Tôi có nên ở lại đây không nhỉ? – Tôi muốn anh đi với chúng tôi hơn.)

Shall I tell them the news? – No, I’d rather they didn’t know. (Tôi nói cho họ biết tin nhé? – Không, tôi muốn họ không biết thì hơn.)

Should I tell them or would you rather they didn’t know?(Tôi sẽ nói với họ nhé hay là anh không muốn cho họ biết hơn?)

Lưu ý!

Trong cấu trúc này, chúng ta dùng động từ ở thì Quá khứ (came, did, …) nhưng ý nghĩa lại là hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

Hãy so sánh:

I’d rather cook the soup. (Tôi thích nấu món súp hơn.)

Nhưng:

Tôi muốn bạn nấu súp. => không nói “Tôi thà nấu súp”.

(Tôi muốn bạn nấu món súp hơn.)

Dạng phủ định của cấu trúc này là Would rather somebody didn’t V

Ví dụ:

I would rather you didn’t say anything I said to you.

(Tôi không muốn anh nói cho bất kỳ ai những gì tôi đã nói.)

So sánh Would và Prefer rather…than

1. Hai cụm từ would rather và Prefer rather đều biểu đạt sở thích

• I prefer walking to cycling = I would rather walk than cycle.

=> Tôi thích đi bộ hơn là đạp xe.

2. Sau prefer chúng ta sử dụng V-ing

• I prefer using a keyboard to writing with a pen.
• I’d rather use a keyboard than write with a pen.

=> Tôi thích sử dụng bàn phím hơn là viết bằng bút mực

Phân biệt cách sử dụng cấu trúc “ PREFER “ Và “ WOULD PREFER” theo ngữ cảnh

1.  Prefer” diễn tả sự yêu thích chung chung, mang tính lâu dài còn “ Would prefer” diễn tả sở thích trong trường hợp cụ thể tại 1 thời điểm cụ thể. 

Ví dụ : 

Tôi thích hát hơn là nhảy. 

( Tôi thích hát hơn là nhảy)

Cô thích ăn kem ở tiệm Halo hơn là ăn ở những tiệm khác. 

( Cô ấy thích ăn kem ở cửa hàng Halo hơn là ở những cửa hàng khác )

2.  “Would prefer” thường sử dụng trong hoàn cảnh trang trọng lịch sự hơn. Nên ít sử dụng trong giao tiếp thông thường hằng ngày. 
3.  “ Would prefer” thường được sử dụng trong câu viết lại thể hiện sở thích, thích cái gì của ai đó. 
4.  Trong câu phủ định, “ Would Prefer “ cũng có cấu trúc giống “ Prefer” , thêm Not sau Prefer để diễn tả sự không yêu thích 1 điều gì đó

Ví dụ : 

Tôi không muốn chơi guitar 

( Tôi không thích chơi guitar)
