#1. Định nghĩa

Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn (Past perfect continuous) được dùng để diễn tả quá trình xảy ra 1 hành động bắt đầu trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.

#2. Cấu trúc thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

#3. Sử dụng thì này như thế nào?

➣ Diễn đạt một hành động đang xảy ra trước một hành động trong quá khứ (nhấn mạng tính tiếp diễn)

Ví dụ: 

– I had been thinking about that before you mentioned it.

Tôi vẫn đang nghĩ về điều đó trước khi bạn đề cập tới.

➣ Diễn đạt hành động là nguyên nhân của một điều gì đó trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: 

– Sam gained weight because she had been overeating.

Sam tăng cân vì cô ấy đã ăn quá nhiều.

– Betty fail the final test because she hadn’t been attending class.

Betty đã trượt bài kiểm tra cuối kì vì cô ấy không tham gia lớp học.

➣ Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra kéo dài liên tục trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: 

– The couple had been quarreling for 1 hour before their daughter came back home.
Đôi vợ chồng đã cãi nhau suốt một giờ trước khi đứa con gái về nhà.

–  The student had been waiting in the meeting room for almost an hour before he was punished.
Cậu học sinh đã chờ gần một tiếng trong phòng họp trước khi chịu phạt.

➣ Diễn tả hành động xảy ra để chuẩn bị cho một hành động khác.

Ví dụ: 

– I had been practicing for five months and was ready for the championship.
Tôi đã luyện tập suốt 5 tháng và sẵn sàng cho giải vô địch.

–  Willis had been studying hard and felt good about the Spanish test he was about to take. 
Willis đã học hành rất chăm chỉ và cảm thấy rất tốt về bài thi tiếng Tây Ban Nha mà anh ấy đã làm.

–  Anna and Mark had been falling in love for 5 years and prepared for a wedding.
Anna và Mark đã yêu nhau được 5 năm và đã chuẩn bị cho một đám cưới.

➣ Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra kéo dài liên tục trước một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: 

– She had been walking for 2 hours before 11 p.m. last night.
Cô ấy đã đi bộ 2 tiếng đồng hồ tính đến 9 giờ tối qua.

–  My younger brother had been crying for almost 1 hour before lunchtime.
Em trai tôi đã khóc suốt một giờ trước bữa trưa.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết

Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn có một số từ có xuất hiện nhiều trong câu như:

Until then (cho đến lúc đó)

Ví dụ: Until then, I had been cooking. (Cho đến lúc đó, tôi vẫn đang nấu ăn.)

By the time (vào lúc)

Ví dụ: By the time Ronaldo kicked the ball, the goalkeeper had been stooping like heaven. (Vào thời điểm Ronaldo sút bóng, thủ môn đã lom khom như trời giáng.)

Prior to that time (thời điểm trước đó)

Ví dụ: Prior to that time, the corona virus had been controlling by the government. (Thời điểm trước đó, virus corona đã được chính phủ kiểm soát.)

Ngoài ra còn có các từ chỉ thời gian như: before, after cũng là dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn.

Phân biệt quá khứ hoàn thành và quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

Một số người học thường hay sai lầm giữa thì quá khứ hoàn thành và quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn. Bởi vậy, bạn cần phải lưu ý một số cách phân biệt 2 thì trên như sau:

5.1. Cách phân biệt cấu trúc

Động từ “to be” S + had been + Adj/ noun Ex: My father had been a great singer when he was a student Động từ thường: S + had +Ved(past participle) Ex:  I met John after he had divorced.	S + had been + V-ing Ex: When I looked out of the window, it had been sunning
