Cách dùng If only

If only (giá như) được dùng để diễn tả những ước muốn ở hiện tại, tương lai và quá khứ tùy thuộc vào các thì theo sau nó. If only có ý nghĩa tương tự như I wish (tôi ước) nhưng mang tính chất nhấn mạnh hơn, thể hiện một mong muốn mạnh mẽ hơn. Mệnh đề đi cùng với If only thường đứng một mình và không có mệnh đề chính. Dưới đây là các cách sử dụng If only khi muốn bay tỏ một mong muốn. 

1. If only + S + past tense.

Chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc này để diễn tả một ước muốn không có thật ở hiện tại, trái ngược hoàn toàn với thực tế.
Ví dụ: 
If only I knew more people!
(Giá như tôi biết nhiều người hơn.)
If only I was better-looking.
(Giá như tôi trông đẹp trai hơn.)

Chúng ta cũng có thể dùng were thay cho was.
Ví dụ:
If only your father were here.
(Giá như bố cậu ở đây.)

2. If only + S + would + infinitive (without to)

Chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc này để nói về một mong muốn trong tương lai.
Ví dụ:
If only it would stop raining, we could go out.
(Giá mà trời tạnh mưa, bọn mình có thể đi chơi.)
If only somebody would smile!
(Giá mà ai đó mỉm cười.)

3. If only + S + past perfect tense

Chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc này nói về quá khứ.
Ví dụ:
If only she hadn’t told the police, everything would have been all right.
(Giá mà cô ấy đừng khai gì với cảnh sát, thì mọi chuyện có lẽ đã ổn thỏa.)

Cách dùng if only

Thông thường, người ta sử dụng “if only” để bày tỏ sự mong muốn, tiếc nuối về một điều gì đó đã xảy ra. 

Nhắc đến “if only”, người ta sẽ ngay lập tức nghĩ đến cấu trúc “I wish” với ý nghĩa tương tự. Tuy nhiên, trên thực tế, cấu trúc if only diễn tả sự tiếc nuối mạnh mẽ, mãnh liệt và day dứt hơn so với “I wish” nhiều lần.

Ví dụ:

  • If only he knew the truth. (he doesn’t know the truth, but he wishes he did) (Ước gì anh ta biết được sự thật (Anh ta không biết sự thật, người nói đang ước rằng anh ta biết)).

  Chúng ta phải dùng were thay cho was trong trường hợp cần sự trang trọng cho câu nói:

  • If only she weren’t so tired. (If only she wasn’t so tired.) (Ước gì cô ấy đã không quá mệt.)

Cấu trúc if only

2.1. If only ở tương lai

Cách dùng if only: Diễn tả một mong muốn trong tương lai.

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S + would/ could + V (bare) + …

Ví dụ:

  • If only I could be in Hanoi next week. (Giá mà tôi ở thể ở Hà Nội vào tuần tới)
  • If only I would take a trip to visit you tomorrow. (Giá mà tôi có thể đến thăm bạn vào ngày mai)

2.2. If only ở hiện tại

Cách dùng: Diễn tả một điều ước không có thực với hiện tại.

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S+ V2/-ed + …

Lưu ý: Tương tự như câu điều kiện, câu ước wish, động từ to be trong cấu trúc if only loại 2 được chia là were cho tất cả các ngôi.

Ví dụ:

  • If only I were a millionaire, then everyone wouldn’t look down at me. (Nếu tôi là triệu phú, thì mọi người sẽ không khinh thường tôi được)
  • If only my mother were here, she would know what to do. (Nếu mẹ tôi có ở đây, bà ấy sẽ biết phải làm thế nào)

2.3. If only ở quá khứ

Cách dùng: Diễn tả một điều ước, một giả thiết không có thực ở quá khứ

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S + had + V3/-ed + …

Ví dụ:

  • If only he hadn’t ask his girlfriend for money. (Giá mà anh ta không hỏi mượn bạn gái mình tiền)
  • If only I had come there earlier. (Giá mà tôi tới đó sớm hơn chút)

2.4. Cấu trúc “not only but also” đặc biệt

Tương tự với “if only” – “not only but also” cũng là một cấu trúc nhấn mạnh quen thuộc trong tiếng Anh. Khi sử dụng cấu trúc này, thông thường người nói/viết sở hữu ít nhất hai thứ và muốn nhấn mạnh thêm vào điều thứ hai bởi lẽ chúng tốt hơn, tệ hơn, ấn tượng hơn hay gây sốc hơn so với điều đầu tiên.

Công thức của cấu trúc “not only but also” khá đơn giản chỉ gồm: S + not only (điều bình thường) but also (điều ấn tượng, bất ngờ).

Ví dụ: She is not only beautiful but also intelligent (Cô ấy không chỉ xinh đẹp mà còn thông minh).

Tuy nhiên, do mang đặc trưng của một cấu trúc song song, nên khi sử dụng các bạn cần lưu ý về từ loại của các thành phần theo sau “not only” và “but also”. Tất cả chúng đều phải giống nhau – cùng là động từ, tính từ, hoặc danh từ.

2.5. Câu điều ước (Wish/ If only) trong tiếng Anh

Cấu trúc: If only = S + wish

Ví dụ: 

  • She wish she had attended that lecture. (= If only she had attended that lecture.) => but she failed to attend.

If only I had bought that shirt. (= I wish I had bought that shirt.) => but I did not buy.

Only if, if only

Only if được dùng trong câu điều kiện đặc biệt với mục đích nhấn mạnh.

Đôi khi, đặt only trước động từ trong mệnh đề chính.

Cụm if and only if còn mang ý nhấn mạnh hơn đến việc chỉ tồn tại một khả năng duy nhất.

Ví dụ:

  • You are allowed to enter this room only if I have given permission. (Bạn được phép vào phòng này chỉ khi tôi cho phép.)
  • He’ll come only if he’s ordered to. (Chỉ khi được gọi, anh ta sẽ đến.)
  • My children will only eat a breakfast cereal if they’ve seen it on TV first. (Con tôi sẽ chỉ ăn bữa ngũ cốc cho bữa sáng nếu chúng nhìn thấy TV trước tiên.)
  • You can enter this house if and only if my father agrees. (Bạn có thể vào được ngôi nhà này khi và chỉ khi bố tôi đồng ý.)

Ta có thể dùng if only trong câu điều kiện không có thật để diễn tả sự hối tiếc hay mong ước, khát khao một điều gì đó.

Ví dụ: 

  • If only I had an extra money, I’d buy more gifts for the poor children. (Giá như tôi có thêm một khoản tiền, tôi sẽ mua thêm quà cho lũ trẻ.)
  • If only she had been wearing a seat belt, she could have survived the crash. (Giá như cô ấy thắt dây an toàn, cô ấy đã có thể sống.)
